The Red Haired Man--author unknown The Blue Lias Inn, is situated near the village of Stockton, not far from the town of Rugby and in the county of Warwickshire, U.K It is a picturesque pub that serves good food and fine ales, I have visited it myself many times, so can personally vouch for the service and quality of the fare on offer. It has a sinister history though, in the 18th century it was originally a farmhouse and a tragic murder happened there. The farm at that time, was a thriving business and employed quite a number of people in the locality, including a young red haired man. This young man and the farmers wife, a pretty women by all accounts, were attracted to one another and they soon became involved in a passionate affair, that eventually led to tragic consequences. The farmer arriving home early from market, heard talking emanating from upstairs of the farmhouse, on investigation, he was appalled to find his pretty wife making love with the young red haired farm worker in one of the bedrooms, in a fit of blind rage, he dragged the unfortunate man from the arms of his wife and gave him such a severe beating, that the young man died. Since then the building has been haunted by the ghost of the young red haired man. He has appeared with such clarity that at times he has been mistaken for a customer and has even been spoken to, until he disappeared by walking straight through a solid brick wall! Landlords and guests of the establishment have all talked of the sometimes cold and eerie atmosphere of the building, strange footsteps have been heard at night, one step heavy, the next quite light, it then came to be known that the farmer had a wooden leg and it was thought to be his ghostly steps that are heard, doors mysteriously open an close of their own accord and the sounds of furniture moving in one of the bedrooms is often heard, many people think it is the ghostly sounds of the tragic fight between the farmer and the young man! |
